We recently received a notification that the Minnesota Department of Health has identified a set of cooling towers at Citrus Systems, Inc. as a likely source of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Hopkins, Minnesota. We are currently working in close cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Health regarding any recommendations they may have, and we are taking numerous proactive steps to maintain the high health standards within our facility.


What is Legionnaires’ Disease?

Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia that contracted by inhaling water droplets from a source containing the Legionella bacteria. It is not contagious from person to person. Are Citrus Systems beverages safe?

Does Citrus Systems have a Food Safety Program?

Yes. Citrus Systems is held to the Global Food Safety Initiative standard through a level 3 Safe Quality Food certification (the highest level). Our independent audit score in 2016/2017 was a 96/100 placing us in the top 3% of Food Manufacturers.


What is Citrus Systems Track Record?

Does the recent outbreak of Legionella pose ANY risk to Food Safety and the products Citrus Systems produces?

No. All food production systems are completely separate from the exterior cooling towers which are only used to cool refrigerant compressor systems.


What is the science behind the safety of our products?

According to the World Health Organization, at temperatures above 70°C (158°F) they (legionellae) are destroyed almost instantly. All products produced at Citrus Systems are pasteurized at temperatures in excess of 165°F. Any legionella bacteria present would be destroyed if present in the product.


Does Citrus Systems have a water management program in place?

Yes. Citrus Systems employs the world leader in water treatment as its vendor partner. We have invested in state of the art real time 24/7 monitoring, automated treatment, as well as ongoing testing by our vendor partner’s CDC ELITE certified laboratory.
